John Frank Ittenbach Jr., 79, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2023. He was born on March 30, 1944 to John Frank Ittenbach Sr. and Ruth (Beauchamp) Ittenbach Statz. After high school, John went on to attend Ball State University, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in 1966. John continued his education at Indiana University where he studied law. He graduated magna cum laude with a JD degree and was admitted to the bar in 1973.
John started his career in law as a Deputy Prosecutor for Marion County from 1973 to 1975. He joined forces with a colleague from law school to open the law firm Sheeks and Ittenbach with a focus on corporate law and trial work. In 1983, he proceeded to open his own firm, Ittenbach, Johnson & Koeller, working there for 34 years and specializing in civil litigation and medical licensing cases. He retired from his legal practice in 2017.
John was an all-around athlete with All City and All State titles for wrestling and football at Cathedral High School. As an adult, he was avid tennis fan- both playing and watching. He played in several tennis leagues over the years. In his 70’s he took up the game of pickle ball which became a favorite pastime. He played multiple times a week with his friends at the Rivera Club where he had been a member most of his life. He enjoyed classical music and history books. John was known to everyone as someone you could always count on, an inspiration, a scholar a mentor and a coach. He was a good husband and father strong in his faith , bright, curious , empathetic , kind and principled with a strong moral compass. We will miss his kindness, warmth and gentle nature forever.
John is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Janet and daughter, Lynne Hammond (Jason Hammond), and siblings Dave Ittenbach (Lois), Jim Ittenbach (Sandy), Cathy Hurcomb (Chuck), Walter Ittenbach (Simone), Dennis Ittenbach (the late Ann).
Services are being held at St. Pius Catholic Church, 7200 Sarto Dr. Indianapolis, IN 46240 on Tuesday April 11, 2023 at 12:00 pm with visitation beginning an hour prior at 11:00 am. John will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
