“Johnny”, as he was known by his family and friends, was loved by so many. In addition to his family and friends he was respected and loved by his brothers and sisters at Marion County Sheriff Department (MCSD), hospital staff, and inmates as well. He touched many lives that we will never know. The stories have poured in about his life of service that started at a young age. He was known as kind and fair to everyone. He loved animals and even fed the stray cats who came to live in his yard as his outdoor pets.
John’s defining characteristic was his devotion to his sons. He was always there for his boys, and they always came first. If he wasn’t working, he was spending time with them. They all grew up to be fine young men and he was so proud of each one of them.
He was a five-sport star athlete at Lawrence North High School. He played football, basketball, baseball, track, and golf. His picture was on the wall of the old Lawrence North stadium until they tore it down and at least one of his records may still stand. He passed his athletic skills to his four boys through countless hours of throwing balls, playing golf, and coaching. He also shared with them his love of the outdoors through fishing and hunting.
Johnny had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh with his jokes. He was a hard worker and worked a lot of overtime. He could never pass a pawn shop without stopping and had a good eye for finding quality treasures, which he shared generously.
The absence of Johnny's smiling face and laughter will leave a huge hole in the Durm family, and he will always be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather Ed Buckley and nephew Chris Durm.
Johnny was the beloved father of John Durm, Jr. (Jordan), Cory Durm (Sami), Robert Durm, Bryce Durm.
