John Jacob Carter

John Jacob Carter, 59, was called home to be with the Lord on September 7, 2024. A man of tremendous faith, John was born on May 21, 1965, to Lawrence Nicholson Carter and Jane Pfenninger Carter, and was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis. He was a graduate of North Central High School and Indiana University Bloomington School of Business. John had an avid love of nature and the outdoors. He spent countless trips camping, hiking, and climbing in the Pacific Northwest when he was young and received his Eagle Scout from BSA Troop 133 in high school. He became a pilot after college graduation and loved traveling the skies with his dad. Some would call him a fitness fanatic, having competed in countless triathlons, endurathons, and an Ironman at Lake Placid. He was ALWAYS training for something. He loved cycling and enjoyed his years riding in IU’s Little 500 for his Sigma Chi Fraternity. In recent years, Orangetheory was a highlight in his active lifestyle and he loved participating in classes with his daughters. John enjoyed his work at the family lumber company, Carter-Lee Lumber, which later became Builders First Source. He loved working alongside his son at the lumberyard. John will be remembered for his fun-loving spirit, his faith in God, and his love for his family. In 1989 he married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Miller Carter. Together, they raised three wonderful children, Molly Jameson Mohrfeld (Matthew), Benjamin Lawrence Carter (Allison), and Margaret (Maggie) Miller Carter, all of whom survive him. John had three granddaughters: Miller Jameson Mohrfeld, Charlotte Leland Carter, and Marguerite Susan Mohrfeld. He also is survived by his parents, Lawrence Nicholson Carter and Jane Pfenninger Carter, and his brother David Lawrence Carter (Marta) and their daughter Vyla Grace Carter. One of the places most dear to John’s heart was Leland, Michigan, where he spent many quality years with his family, great friends and yes… his favorite…. the doggies! John was an avid participant in Bible Study Fellowship and a member of College Park Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested in his name to College Park Church. The calling and service will be at College Park Church, 2606 West 96th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46268, on Friday, September 13. The calling will begin at 10:00 and the service a 11:30.
