I, Jimmy Vance, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Valerie Graham and Ben Vance on April 15, 1946 at our home on 1541 Martindale now known as Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue. Early in my life, I was baptized at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. I attended Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) 26, 87, and Crispus Attucks High School. My favorite high school related activities were playing basketball and running cross-country.
Upon graduating high school in 1964, I enlisted into the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. I served our country in Japan and Vermont. After my time in the Air force, I returned to Indianapolis and began working at the United States Postal Service. I joined the Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church on 1202 Eugene Street and accepted Jesus Chris as my Lord and Savior. I enjoyed greatly the 1970's R&B music, and collected many albums. I developed a small recycling business using my red Chevy truck to pick up many designated recyclable items where I delivered them to the recycling plant. Additionally, I ran in local running events.
After I retired from the United States Postal Service in 2006, I continued my enjoyment of reading the Indy Star/News, watching a very large quantity of DVD movies according to certain characters such as James Bond, Star Wars, basketball, watching Charles Stanley, and spending time with my siblings.
Thank you coming to my celebration of life, and supporting my family. Remember that I spent my life one day at a time because tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us. I know I will be missed by many, but be assured my one day at a time is now a day of eternity in heaven. I can run and not faint.
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"-- yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."(James 4:13 -15(ESV))
I am preceded in death by my mother, Valerie Graham, and my father, Ben Vance.
I leave to cherish in my memory my only child, Jason A S Vance my former spouse, Gwendolyn F. (King) Thurman. Of my siblings, I leave Judy (Griffin) Harris, Jerry Vance, Brenda (Harris) Caudle, Carla V Jones and Martha L. Vance. I leave four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers: Dwight King, Jr, Justin King, Jason A S Vance, II.
In lieu of memorials, please send donations to Diabetes Research Institute.
My family extends their sincere thanks to everyone offering prayers, words of encouragement, and sincere counseling as they mourn my passing.
