He was born on March 7, 1925 in Newcastle, IN to Isaac and Mosseline Ward.
He was a graduate of Elwood High School in Elwood, IN. He joined the United States Army Air Corps after high school and was a pilot in World War II. After the war, he attended Purdue University, where he obtained a degree in engineering, and went on to work at Indiana Bell for 37 years. He continued his love of flying in his own Piper Cherokee for several years.
He retired to Homosassa, FL with his wife Janyce, enjoying golfing, fishing, and boating. They spent their summers in Indianapolis and on Yellow Creek Lake. He was a strong and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, known affectionately as “Granddaddy.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dewey and Melburn, and his wife of 54 years, 3 months, and 22 days; Janyce (Knotts) Ward.
Survivors include a son Jim of Yellow Creek Lake, a daughter Laura (Jeff) of Indianapolis, three grandchildren; Amanda (Joe), Jeffrey, and Matthew, three great grandchildren, and nine nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
