Jim was born in Indianapolis on December 29, 1925 to Cornelius and Laura Dwyer Loughery. He attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church before attending Cathedral High School graduating in 1943. He then served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He returned from the service becoming an alumnus of Purdue University and a graduate of Butler University.
Jim began his career in the financial services industry in 1953. He joined the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company which later merged with the Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company and remained active as an agent emeritus. He was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table and concentrated his services on estate analysis, insurance tax planning, business and executive compensation planning.
He served in various organizations, including past president of the Estate Planning Council of Indianapolis and was an officer and trustee of the Indianapolis Association of Life Underwriters and the Indianapolis chapter of CLU, past president of St. Elizabeth Home and the Serra Club of Indianapolis, board member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club, and Marquette Manor and served as a member of the St. Vincent Hospital Ethics Forum and was a trustee of Cathedral High School. He was named a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem by Pope Paul II.
Jim was a proud Irishman and was named by the Indianapolis Athletic Club as Irish Member of the Year on St. Patrick’s Day in 1999. He was a Scout Master and Committee Member – Boy Scout Troup 94 and 174 respectively. Jim was a devout Catholic and instilled his love of God and strong faith in each of his children.
Jim married Mary Lou Jacobs in 1949 for 65 years until her passing in 2014. He was an active member of St. Luke Catholic Church and had eight children, fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou, infant son Louis Dwyer Loughery and grandson Christopher Schweikert, son in law, Edward Heid, siblings, Edward Loughery, Robert Loughery, Marian Potter and Joan Courtney. He is survived by four daughters, Anne Heid, Susan Loviscek, Beth Schweikert (Chris) and Lora Prange (Doug); three sons, Steve Loughery (Christine), Mark Loughery (Jeanne) and Tom Loughery (Sarah).
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 14 at 11:30 am in St Luke Catholic Church with family and friends gathering from 10:00 to 11:30.
