James received his education in the Plum Grove School System. He then had an itching to move north and relocated in 1955 to Indianapolis, Indiana.
James felt at home in Indianapolis and started his working career in construction, working for Smith & Johnson Construction. A few years passed and he returns to Mississippi and was united in marriage to Elizabeth Clay and to this union he had one daughter and two sons.
James always loved visiting his relatives and traveling back to Mississippi whenever a car was heading in that direction. You can bet that he was in the passenger seat when he was not driving.
In 1974, James married Carrie Wooden DeVine and to this union he had one daughter. Also, in 1974 James confessed his hope in Christ and was baptized by Brother Lawrence Wooden at Fall Creek Parkway Church of Christ, where he remained a member until his health started to fail.
Throughout James’ work career he worked in various fields, food services at Methodist Hospital, truck driver for Seal Test Ice Cream, Stokely Van Camp canning department until it was bought out by Heekin Can Co. and then by Ball’s Metal Container and Specialty Product Group from which he retired after over 20 years of service. Well, after retiring James got somewhat restless and took a job has a courtesy driver for some local hotel/motels for a couple of years.
James was an avid blues and jazz music lover. He loved music so much he had a radio, cassette player and DVD player in every room of the house. James also had a wide selection of blues and jazz albums, cassettes and DVD’s, from the 50’s on up to the present. He also enjoyed his birthday, Father’s day and Christmas with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. James Bernard Hill went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at the age of 85 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Mae Harris Frye & J.C. Hill and one sister, Iola Barnes.
James leaves to cherish fond memories, his devoted wife of 45 years, Carrie; three daughters, Paula DeVine, Sandra (Sandy) Hill, Jenene Rudolph (Dwight); three sons, Kevin Hill, Jeffrey Hill (Teresa), Vincent Malone; one sister, Gabrielle Buchanan (Michael) (Nashville, TN); ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two sister-in-law’s, one brother-in-law, special cousin friend, Henry Jackson and a host of relatives and friends.
