He received his primary and secondary education through the Indianapolis Public School system. He was a graduate of Crispus Attacks High School. James also attended Purdue University obtaining several certifications.
James confessed his faith in Christ at an early age at Macedonia Baptist Church.
James enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1960, and served for 2 years. Finishing his last 3 years serving in the Army Reserve until 1965.
James married the love of his love, Hattie. To this union two children were born, Helen and Jerri.
He was employed at Eli Lily for 32 years as a supervisor in the Dry Goods and Manufacturing department. He retired at the age of 50 and fulfilled his time with several hobbies over the years.
James had a love for fishing, cooking and traveling. As well as enjoying helping and teaching others, he began to volunteer at Community East Hospital. In addition to filling up his free time he worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Lucas Oil Stadium.
James was deeply loved and adored by his family and friends. He was a great provider, intelligent and meticulous man. He was the most loving, caring and patient person.
James leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 60 years Hattie Cushenberry; two daughters Helen Cushenberry and Jerri Cushenberry; one grand-daughter Jerika Broyles; two great- grandchildren Demariyah Broyles and Jerry Banks; and one sister Delores Graves. And a host of nieces, nephews.
