Hugh Barry McGowan, age 79, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Hugh was born April 11, 1944 in Indianapolis to William and Martha (Barry) McGowan. Hugh graduated from Cathedral High School in 1962. After high school, he obtained his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1966. Soon after graduation, he married the love of his life Jeanmarie (Fillenwarth). They spent the next 55 years married to their best friend and raised 3 children, Hugh, Mike and Mary Ellen and were blessed with 5 grandchildren, Jack, Maggie, Jimmy, Anna and Colin.
In 1969, he joined his father at McGowan Insurance Group, retiring after 50 years. During his career he gave back to his industry and his community. Among the numerous boards and organizations Hugh impacted, he was past President of the CYO Board, past National President of CPCU Society and State President of the Indiana Big I. Among his many honors he was designated a Sagamore of the Wabash, Irish Citizen of the Year, and after being President of the Indianapolis Notre Dame Club, he was recognized as their Man of the Year. His greatest joy, however, was coaching his children in CYO sports, going on family vacations and attending sporting events with family and friends.
Hugh always said his biggest achievement was sharing his life with his wife, 3 children and their spouses and 5 grandchildren. Hugh and Jeanmarie opened their hearts and their home to their extended family, their numerous friends and took great joy in getting to know his children's friends.
Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jeanmarie McGowan; children, Hugh (Kate Jackson) McGowan, Mike McGowan, Mary Ellen (Jim) Landry; 5 grandchildren; and siblings, Bill McGowan and Mary Beth Crossin.
A visitation for Hugh will take place on Sunday, November 12, 2023 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7200 Sarto Dr. Indianapolis, IN 46240. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 13, 2023 at 10:00 AM also at the church. Hugh will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Indianapolis.
