Helen Louise Lohss passed away on October 26, 2022 at Newmark Care Center in Kansas City, MO. She was 105 years old, born on March 15, 1917 in Galveston, Indiana. She married Paul Lohss in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1937. Paul died in 1975 after a long battle with illness.
Helen’s early life was difficult. She had to work to support herself from an early age. Although she was a good student, she was unable to complete high school but she proudly attended classes and received her diploma at age 52 from Howe High School while caring for Paul and also working.
At the age of 79, she moved to Sun City, Arizona to re-join several old friends who had retired there. She lived with and cared for one of her friends, who died of cancer. For her 90th birthday, she got her wish to take a hot air balloon ride. At age 92 she moved to the Kansas City area to be near her daughter.
At age 101, she suffered a broken leg and moved to Newmark. Doctors said she would never walk again; however, she surprised them all and was walking after just a few months. She did that a lot. Helen lived through two pandemics, two World Wars and the Great Depression during her lifetime.
Helen was a person who always reached out to others and made friends easily. She was witty, funny, and adventurous and beloved by many who knew her. Above all she was self-reliant, determined, and courageous. She overcame every setback that she faced.
She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Nothing was more important to her than her family, even in her last days.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents Earl and Florence Snyder, her beloved sister Sarah Homeier and brother Gaines Snyder who was a WWII P.O.W. survivor.
She is survived by her son William Lohss, her daughter Cheryl Horton (Larry), grandchildren Brad (Katie) and Brian Horton, and great-grandchildren Greta, Holly, and Rhett Horton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Crossroads Hospice Charitable Foundation, 10810 E. 45th St, Suite 300, Tulsa OK 74146.
