Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery
Helen Jane Huggins Bass was 1 of 5 children born in Lawrenceburg KY, April 26, 1933 to Cleo and Mary Huggins Sr, who preceded her in death. Her sister Jean also preceded her in death. She moved to Indianapolis at an early age where she met the love of her life, Joe L Bass Sr. They united in marriage to which 3 children were borne in this union prior to their dissolution. Despite the dissolution of the union they became best friends and remained such until Joe's death.
Helen united with Irvington First Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Rev. R.H. Noel and served continuously and faithfully through 4 pastors. She was still serving faithfully and diligently under the current pastor, Anthony Smith. She loved her Pastor and First Lady Tanya and always spoke highly of them both as well as prayed for them regularly.
Helen loved the Lord and it was evident. She walked the walk daily! She truly lived a Godly life no matter what obstacles or injustices she faced. She always handled things the way God expected, with a loving, praying and forgiving heart. Never complaining. She loved her family, friends and her church family with all her heart. No matter what went on, even during troubled times, her love did not wavier and she always prayed about every situation. She was well known in the neighborhood and could always be found meeting any need that she could for any and everyone. Cooking and sharing with friends, family, neighbors or even a stranger if they appeared at her door needing to be nourished physically or spiritually. She was the neighborhood "braider" having the fine art of "French Braiding". In the church there was never a task or request too big or too small, whether it was cooking, especially her hot water cornbread, or giving a recitation at a service or program. She was a long-time faithful member of the Women's Chorus, Senior Choir and worked on the kitchen committee.
Helen never missed Sunday School, Sunday services, Bible Study or any services the church had whether it was at the church or they fellowshipped at another church unless there was an illness. She took nothing for granted and always pressed her way whenever possible. She was quite grateful and appreciative of her church family, inclusive of the Pastor and wife, deacons and members that always made sure she and Debbie Ann had transportation to all services and events. She was so appreciative of any and everything anyone did for her and Debbie Ann.
Helen was affectionately known in the neighborhood as "Aunt Helen" to nearly all, to know her was to love her. That sweet smile, sweet spirit, soft spoken voice - one of the most loving, caring, God fearing persons you could ever encounter. If you met her and was in her presence any amount of time you definitely could consider yourself blessed! Helen touched many lives as she gave of herself, always willing to listen and under God's instruction she imparted wisdom and God's word. Even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear, she would be truthful and respectful.
Helen took her earthly final flight on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at the age of 87 years and 21 days.
She is lovingly survived by her 3 children - Deborah (Debbie) Ann Bass, JoAnn McClennon, and Joe L Bass Jr all of Indianapolis IN; 2 sisters - Della Greene, Lawrenceburg KY and Shirley Adams, Lexington KY; 1 brother -Cleo Huggins Jr (Euith) of Indianapolis IN; 3 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and her beloved church family.
Helen leaves this thought she always shared with her children:
"Don't do evil for evil, don't do it your way, do it God's way and He will give you a blessing!"
