I had the pleasure of getting to know Greg when he served on the board of the Indiana Recycling Coalition. He joined in 2013, quickly joined the executive board as VP,  became president in 2018, and was instrumental in overseeing the organization's transition between Executive Directors. His passion for sustainability, his willingness to share his time and talent, and his leadership skills all greatly benefitted the organization.  He walked the talk.

He was more than a board member, though; he was a great friend and mentor to many of us. I learned so much from him and will never forget the wisdom he imparted - from board leadership to fully embracing all of life to loving hard to battling cancer with such grace and grit and strength, and sharing that journey via his blog.

Thank you, my friend, for making this world a better place and making those who knew you better people. You will live on in all of us. Rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I worked with him at Lilly and was always impressed with his professional approach to his work and the support he gave to those around him.  He was a pleasure to be with on and off the job.   I know he is greatly missed.

I have reported to Greg for a number of years and he was a great boss, coach, mentor and leader but above all else, a friend who you knew you could always turn to for support and advice.  Even during the toughest of times on his journey, I'd struggle to get an opportunity to ask him how he was, before without fail he'd launch in with "How are YOU and the family?"  He genuinely cared every single time he asked that.  I'm going to miss him tremendously and Greg's legacy will live on in all the lives that he impacted so positively.

Greg was a very special person.  I worked with Greg in his time in HSE at Lilly.  He was always so kind and cared deeply for what he was working on to help advance environmental for the company.  He was what the team needed (endless fresh perspective and energy) and all of us who worked along side him got to see a person with total class.   A funny memory is even in hard times (e.g. the famous removal of trash can project) Greg smiled and never said an unkind word - always working for what was right.  Watching him work was watching a true professional.   I know those traits of kindness and care carried into his personal life so to his family my thoughts are with you and  know that his traits are in you too making you strong and blessed.

I knew and worked with Greg for around 20 years and I can honestly say he was one of the nicest people I've ever met. During my last few years at Lilly, before retiring, he was my boss. He was always supportive and caring for his team, even whilst fighting his own gigantic battle. He amazed me how he fought so hard and stayed so positive.  He will be greatly missed by us all.

Words cannot describe how sorry I am for your loss.  Sending you my deepest condolences, caring thoughts and all my love and prayers.  Hold tight to your memories with Greg and begin to find peace and comfort.  Lean on your family and friends and remember how much love we all have for you.  

I am lucky enough to have known Greg through my dads, who consider him a cherished friend. I met him first as a neighbor in the Real Silk apartments. Since then, he has been a beacon of light at many a gathering and always a joy to talk to. Greg had a knack for making anyone he spoke to at one of our family/friend events  feel comfortable, welcome, and important. This was especially appreciated by me - an awkward introvert. Engaging with Greg meant that you had his undivided attention and his kind and calm focus.  He was such a generous man. He will be missed. 

I had the extreme pleasure of working with Greg over the past few years.  Always encouraging, caring, calming and an amazing leader.  Sending our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones.

I had the privilege of knowing Greg through the IU Simon Cancer Center. This is a picture of him that I took in January 2020. He and his wife are such lovely people. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry we have lost Greg.  I am inspired, though, by all he represents and what he taught us.  There are not enough Gregs in the world and especially now  when they are desperately needed. Though he has left - he leaves in each of us cause and inspiration to do better whenever and wherever we can.  

As a colleague of Greg, I will always remember his intellect and the sparkle in his eye no matter the challenge.  And, also, he introducing me to La Parada which became the place to go when I was lucky enough to join him for lunch.

I enjoyed working with Greg when he joined the Lilly Telecom department right out of school. Prayers for the family and the grandkids who will be missing Grandpa. 


I had the honor of working with Greg at Lilly when he took on the role of leading Lilly's environmental sustainability program.  I had that responsibility on a part-time basis prior to Greg being the first official sustainability leader for Lilly.  I worked with Greg to help him with the transition to a new organization, and I was constantly struck by his kindness, decency, and goodness as a person.  I probably learned more from him than he did from me.  Rest in peace, Greg. 

I remember Greg from Southside High School. He simply was before his time. His maturity and kind heart put him in a class of his own. What a beautiful soul. May God rest your soul, Greg.

I had the good fortune to work with Greg for the most recent 2 years. I live in Arizona, so sadly, we never met in person, but we shared many meaningful video chats, and I consider him a good friend. He was an incredible leader, colleague, mentor, and role model. Our chats sometimes were about work but more often were about life. He loved his family and that always came shining through the video every time Pam and Opal were mentioned. He loved his team more than any other leader, and even though I wasn’t officially on his team, he extended his care to me. It meant the world to me when he would always ask, “How are YOU, Katie?” and “How can I help YOU?” He taught me a lot about life and how to live, and I will miss him terribly.  

I was blessed to work with Greg at Lilly for a number of years.  While he was an outstanding professional in all he accomplished, I will remember him as a wonderful human being.  I will keep you all in my prayers.  May his memory be eternal.  

Condolences to PammY, Greg's family, friends - including Opal Mae. Greg shared his thoughts, time, passions candidly (love it), with a humour, humility, generosity and grace and not a lot of bs. Many conversations contemplating many things (and solving none), but feeling such great connection - and he did that with everyone he interacted.  Our first conversation we shared a habit for naming the creatures and critters we observe (birds, chipmunks, squirrels, etc).  So Greg, this latest one is for you.   Rest in peace. 

I am so sorry for your loss. Greg was my very first manager at Eli Lilly. He was a great man. Always kind and supportive of anything you wanted to accomplish!  I followed his blog and know he was loved by many. Thankful he is no longer having to fight such an uphill battle and he is pain free, yet he will be greatly missed. Big hugs to you all and praying for comfort to surround all of his family!  

Words are not enough to describe the impact that Greg had. 
It's been just under 5 years since I met him when he came to lead our team, and I can say he was more than just a leader of the team. Over the last few years I got to know him, have some real heart to heart chats, and just watch the journey he's been going through, he gave me perspective on not just work, but life in general. 
He really understood what was important in life, and shared that with all of us.  In all our chats, he would always start on checking how I was, and "How are Coco and the kids doing?".  He genuinely  cared about you as an individual first beyond everything else. 

I am glad to have known him and miss him dearly!

Friends, Greg went home last night. He fought long & he fought hard. Looking GQ till the very end I might add. 

During Greg’s life he spread kindness and positivity wherever he went. He loved deeply, he lived gratefully & he cared abundantly. My first of many memories of him was pretending to eat Play-Doh. I of course tried it too… instant regret. He also loved a good laugh. 

Cancer didn’t win. It may have been what eventually took him, but the impact he had on my life and all the others is what really wins. I keep hearing stories of how loved and adored he was. That’s my cousin. Cancer can’t take away our memories, it can’t take away his positive impact on the world and it certainly can’t take away the love we all shared. Cancer didn’t win.

Greg was surrounded by people he loved in his final hours. What a beautiful way to go. Our hearts are broken, our eyes are red & swollen but we know Grandma & papaw have been waiting to hug him tight.

I graduated from Southside High School with Greg.    After South, we went to Indiana University together.    

We lost touch after that, but I will ALWAYS remember the good times we had at Indiana University that first summer.   It was a blast.

We were at The Dog Park at Immanuel on a cool spring day when Greg took this photo of Opal Mae and my Banjo. The two pups were playing when Banjo got a little too territorial over a particular toy. He lashed out at Opal and she ran away crying. I felt so embarrassed, but Greg just laughed and said “no worries, the pack always works itself out.” Thanks for being the leader of our pack, a wonderful friend and kind human being. 

Greg always loved my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I sent to our son at IU.  He was always sneaking more than “one”.   He was a special guy and our son, Andy Barton, will have many special memories.

To Greg's family,

I knew Greg for many years at Lilly.  While I never worked directly with or for him, our paths did cross.  I am honored to have known him.  I can say that, for those of us at Lilly that had the pleasure of knowing him, we all are better people for having known him.  Equally, we are all a little emptier with his passing.

He will certainly be missed.

No words can be expressed regarding Greg's love for life and others.  He and I shared some personal conversations while at work and I only wish I had gotten to know him sooner.  He will be greatly missed and my prayers go out to his family.
