Gloria Gene Poore, 95, Indianapolis, died August 7, 2021. She was born on July 30, 1926 and was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis. Mrs. Poore was married to Marvin A. Poore for 53 years up until his death in 2003. She is predeceased in death by every member of her family in her generation.
She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1944 and she graduated from Butler University in 1948 with a degree in business. She participated in post graduate studies at Northwestern University and attended one year of law school at the Indianapolis Division of the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis where she met and married fellow student Marvin A. Poore and began her family. She was one of five women in her law school class. Marvin Poore finished law school and practiced law for 50 years until his death and Mrs. Poore returned to school and obtained a Masters Degree in Child Psychology and Special Education from Butler in 1974.
She joined the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority while attending Butler University and the Iota Tau Tau Legal Sorority while attending law school.
During World War II she served two years as a Cadet in the USO and during the Korean War she taught as a civilian instructor for the U.S. Adjutant General School at Ft. Harrison.
Mrs. Poore enjoyed a forty year teaching career with a focus on tutoring students with special needs including dyslexia, autism, gifted studies and learning disabilities. During her career she taught and provided education and tutoring services for the following schools and programs: Butler University “Fifth Experience” gifted pre-school; Butler University College of Education; Academy Plus at St.Vincent Hospital; Orchard Pre-School and Kindergarten; Orchard Special Education; Park Tudor; Sycamore School; and Hutson School.
She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. She served on PTO at School 84, as well as a Camp Fire Girls leader, Girl Scout leader and den mother for Cub Scouts. Upon retirement at the young age of 85 she enjoyed family, gardening, antiques, crossword puzzles and reading. She lived in her home in Forest Hills for 62 years and loved her neighbors and neighborhood. Although she faced the challenge of breast cancer she lived independent in her home until one week before her death.
Mrs. Poore suffered the loss of two children. Cosmo Poore died at birth in 1955 and her son James Poore died in 2005 at the young age of 53.
Mrs. Poore is survived by three children Candace A. Wilson, Steven G. Poore (Leslie) and Michael J. Poore (Mary), eight grandchildren, Jennifer Dye, Lishelle Hall, Zachery Smith (Carol), Andrew Poore (Samantha), Elizabeth Smith, Jon Poore (Angela), Thomas Poore and Jacob Poore, six great grandchildren, Joshua Dye, Cristofer Dye, Alexis Hall, Alex Hall, Jason Feyrer, Bennett Bender and one great great grandchild Luca Lugar. Mrs. Poore was also blessed with the attention and love from many nieces and nephews who she loved and cherished.
