GEORGIA ANN BENNETT, affectionately known as "Margie", was born on October 3, 1923 in Whitlock, Tennessee. She was the only daughter of Elmore and Macie Payne and an older sister to five brothers, all of which preceded her in death. Georgia was a devoted Christian since her baptism at a very young age and remained committed to Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis for many years until the time of her death.
Georgia was joined in matrimony in to Naeon Thorpe in Hazel, Kentucky. To this union, two daughters were born, Willa Mae and Evelyn. Naeon preceded Georgia in death. After which, Georgia and her two daughters relocated to Tennessee where she met Juneal Bennett. The two wed in Tennessee and to this union two additional children were born, Clifton and Tonya. Georgia and Juneal remained married until his death. Georgia was a devoted wife and extremely loving mother to all her children. Everyone that knew her knew that she most enjoyed being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved to cook and sew for her children and attempt to teach the girls recipes. Her Sunday meals were craved by her family and to them, it was the best soul food in town. She truly loved her family and even as she aged, she could tell you each of their names and birth order and was so proud to brag about all of them.
Georgia worked as a nurse's aide for many years. Upon relocating to Indianapolis, she went through a training program through Central State Hospital. Through this program she earned certification to work as an advanced level nurse's aide that was able to pass medicine. Georgia was proud of this accomplishment. Despite this occupation and training, Georgia was a woman of many talents and took on many roles. In addition to her work as a nurse's aid she also worked as a nanny, a hairstylist, and seamstress. No matter what job she was working, she always took on a role that allowed her to service and help others.
Georgia truly enjoyed living. While living many years in assisted living facilities, Georgia always participated in the community activities. She enjoyed weekly outings to stores and restaurants. She especially loved sewing, puzzles, bingo, and playing cards with fellow residents. Georgia was extremely popular at The Blooms of Eagle Creek. She met so many friends there and all of them looked forward to attending her annual birthday celebrations that were always filled with her favorite musical performer and cake and attended by all her family.
Georgia departed this life on July 13, 2019 at the age of 95 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmore and Macie Payne; her eldest daughter Willa Mae Harris; and all five of her brothers. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Evelyn "Sam" Yates and Tonya Bennett and son Clifton Bennett; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
