He was born on November 28th, 1948 to the late Milton and Bernadine (Buckley) Carlson in Muskegon, Michigan. He graduated in 1966 from Richmond High School, Richmond, Indiana. He was a proud graduate of Purdue University and was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association.
He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Northside Council of the Knights of Columbus, Number 3433 and 4th degree member of Assembly 245. He was a past president of the School Board of St. Joseph Catholic High School and was instrumental in relocating the school from Jackson, MS. to Madison, MS.
He spent most of his career in various positions with orthopedic companies and more than once was named top sales manager of the year.
While his professional accomplishments were many, his greatest joy came from his family. Whether it was coaching his kids or grandkids sports team, trying to fling someone off the boat tube, or just playing “Waterloo” on the dock, family was paramount in his life. He was very proud of the fact that he was instrumental in working with the Boy Scouts of America and the fact that his son, and now 3 of his grandchildren, have reached the level of Eagle Scout.
He married Martha Hayes in January of 1970 and 5 children were born of this union. Anne (KC) Barr, Bedford, IN, Michelle (Michael) Green, Waxhaw, NC, Barbara Park, Jackson, MS, Bob (Jill Seger) Jackson, MS, and Emily Carlson, Indianapolis. Special exchange daughter, Maritta Ikonen, Finland. His grandchildren are Paul West, Matthew West, granddaughter in law, Dr. Jolie West, Christopher Green, Megan West, Carson Green, Michael Barr, Charlotte Park, Colton Green, Rachael Barr, Elizabeth Park, Brooke Barr, Charlie Barr, Ryan Carlson, Thomas Park, Chloe Barr, Makayla Carlson, Victoria Carlson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Elizabeth Carlson and Ann Carlson, brother-in-law Ron Rostas, and son-in-law David West. He is survived by his wife and children, his sisters Kathy Rostas and Alice Kanta, numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Paradigm Hospice for their guidance in his care and the wonderful staff of Dr. Nirag Gupta’s office for fighting the fight against his cancer with him.
A visitation for Fred will begin at 10:00am on Friday, December 22, 2023 at Christ the King Catholic Church, and conclude at time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment follows at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis, IN.
