Francis (Frank) Sergi Sr. was a resident of Wanamaker-Indianapolis. He was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School. He was the son of Italian immigrants Giuseppe and Theresa Sergi and brother to, Dominic, Tony, Rocky, Tommy, and Mike Sergi and Mary Lorenzano. He was husband of Claris Sergi and the father of Cathy (Larry), Joe (June), Anna Marie and Frankie II (Kristal). He was grandfather to Tereasa, Aaron, Bernadette, Francis, Elizabeth, Michael, Gabrielle, Anthony, Frankie III and Roman. He had 6 great grand children. Frank survived the great depression and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during WWII where he reached rank of Technical Sergeant. He often talked of the train ride to his California Army base and the smell of the orange groves and the incredible desert heat in Death Valley where he was trained. He incurred shrapnel in his back and barbed wire scars on his knee during his time in the military. Sergeant Sergi stood honor guard for President Roosevelt, Admiral Nimitz, and General MacArthur. Frank hiked into live volcanoes, and caught a hammerhead shark from a tiny Hawaiian catamaran. He danced with famous starlets at the Hollywood Canteen, he boxed for the prize of a pound of bacon, and sailed the sea on an aircraft carrier. He was a anti-aircraft gunner. He played tennis for the ARMY tennis team and enjoyed the game after he returned home. Frank attended mass given by the Pope at the Vatican in Rome, and he marveled at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Frank ran into a burning house to save a neighbor’s family. At age 75 he played a round of golf and parred every hole. He won putting competitions and bowling tournaments. Frank knew the names of every movie, actor and actress dating back to the silent era, with The Grapes of Wrath being his all-time favorite film. He loved to learn, filling his home with books, and spent his summers in the sun planting in his expansive garden. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and sang in their choir. Frank was a long time philanthropist, helping needy children, the troubled, and the poor. He loved animals, not unlike his namesake, Saint Francis. He was a devout Catholic, proud Italian, and a friend to many. Above all, Frank was an artist, a creator and lover of beauty. He will be missed dearly. Frank had a sly grin, a warm voice, pretty handwriting and unbelievable charm. It is said when a old man dies a library burns to the ground. On May 9th, a great library was lost. Frank Sergi Sr. took with him the most wonderful stories, life advices, humor, love, empathy, artistic talent, and the recipe for the best spaghetti sauce ever made. The great man, the original Frank Sergi, will be missed more than he could have ever imagined.
