Uncle Floyd was a sweet man. Made me want to go to Purdue after all those trips to games with him and Aunt Connie.

Like my cousin, John above, my memory of uncle Floyd is also of holidays, specifically Christmas. Their house was such a great Christmas house, decorated beautifully and with great food, Santa visits and memories. And like John said, Floyd’s laugh and quiet kindness to each of us cousins won’t be forgotten. To Aunt Connie, Matthew, Mark and Michelle…I’m so so sorry and I know this is a huge and heart breaking loss. I pray for peace and comfort for each of you and for you to be surrounded by friends and family who love you all.  Much love, Carolyn

One of my enduring memories about my brother is a time when our mother was ill and various family members took us in while she healed.  Floyd and I got to go to Aunt Bernice (Nanna) and Uncle Miles’ farm outside Columbus, Ohio.  What fun that was.  They had this big chicken coop and a rooster that would wake us up every morning at the break of dawn.  Aunt Nanna and Uncle Miles would tell us that whoever got to the chicken coop and got the first egg could have that for breakfast. What made me mad is that my brother’s legs were longer and he was faster, which meant he always got the egg.  One day I guess he felt so sorry for me that he sneaked his egg into my pocket so it looked like I got the egg first.  That sense of care and kindness was the beginning of a lifetime of love that he showed toward me and others as well.

The first memory of Uncle Floyd that always comes to mind was Halloween. I remember as a kid we would arrive a Aunt Connie and Uncle Floyd's house and could not wait to see what was set up. The yard was always vast and dark with pumpkins and candles leading up a center staircase to the front door in the center of the house and there as you would enter was a stuffed man made out of news paper and old clothing sitting in a chair with a bowl of candy. With either a foot ball helmet or a pumpkin for a head I can't remember. Maybe it was just a stuffed Halloween mask. Anyways, There was always that Disney record “The Haunted Mansion” Playing in the back ground on a record player that Matt, Mark and Michelle would have set up. After getting spooked and receiving some candy, I always remember walking though the living room, down a few stairs next to the fire place, to the other side of the fireplace where the family room was, and there in a chair, or on the end of a couch was always Uncle Floyd with a smile. He would say “Happy Halloween” and then give one of those Uncle Floyd laughs which where one of a kind. Then we would join him on the couch to watch Friday the 13th or Halloween. This was always a good memory for me and always great to see Uncle Floyd come every Halloween as a kid. We will miss you. Rest In Peace.

I was both surprised and saddened to learn of Floyd’s death. I had enjoyed playing golf with him in a City Club outing less than 6 weeks ago. One of many outings in which we were paired. I particularly remembered an outing at my home in Culver when he asked me for a broom to use as a prop while he sang a rousing rendition of  “Oklahoma” to fellow City Clubbers. Last Christmas season he performed an encore performance, dressed as an elf, while he accompanied a piano. But it was also my pleasure to have shared multiple serious  business relationships while working  jointly on several construction projects. I shall miss him in both roles.
