Edwin (Ted) Horseman Cecil was born March 23, 1922 in England, son to the late Isabella Cecil and Raymond Cecil. He passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024 at Hendricks Regional Hospital, Brownsburg, Indiana.
Ted, when a boy, lived on England’s North Sea coast. He longed to be on board the ships he saw leaving the harbor. During WW2, he was stationed in India with the RAF. His working life took him to Pakistan, Canada, and the United States where he became an American citizen in 1964. He continued to travel, working in Singapore, India, Venezuela, Italy, and many places in the US. Of his many jobs, he was most proud of his participation in the Apollo space program. He last worked in China when he was 86.
Ted married Mary Jane in 1999 and together, they travelled to more than 40 countries. Of these, sailing by Cape Horn was the high point of his life. While not traveling, Ted and Mary Jane were actively involved with friends and family and supported their grandchildren and great-grandchildren at activities and sporting events. Ted and Mary Jane also spent memorable times sailing and relaxing on their 34’ sailboat, Mariah, together with their friends on F Dock, Sandusky, Ohio.
Ted joined Toastmasters in 1964, the same year he became a US citizen. After moving to Indianapolis, he joined the Daybreakers and Fort Harrison Toastmasters’ clubs.
Ted’s son, David, moved to Denmark in 1975 to be with his wife, Yvonne. Ted and Mary Jane visited Denmark often and David’s family visited Indianapolis frequently. Skype enabled the family to stay in touch regularly.
Ted was an inspiration and an amazing role model to all who knew him.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John Richard Cecil. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Cecil; Ted’s sister, Jean Harwood; Ted’s son and daughter-in-law, David and Yvonne Cecil; Mary Jane’s daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Rob Easton, Debbie and Ron Brummett; six grandchildren, Kristian Cecil, Anna Cecil, Brock Easton, Nic Easton, Victoria York, and Angela Brown; 3 great grandchildren, Asher Easton, Roman Easton, and Chandler Oaks; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Ted will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208. The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 1:00 PM, with visitation from 12:00-1:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home.
