Dwight David New, 70, died January 28, 2018. He was born March 1, 1947 in Robinson, Illinois to Luther and Elizabeth Phipps New. Dwight graduated from Robinson High School in 1965 and went on to college at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He graduated in 1967 with an Associate Degree in Machine Drafting and Design Technology there. He also studied Descriptive Geometry at Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana; as well as, Computer Aided Drafting and Design Training in Boston, Massachusetts. Dwight resided in Indianapolis with his wife, Doretta J. Thomas New and was a career draftsman for General Motors, Allison Transmission Division.
Dwight was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He had many diverse hobbies and interests. He loved camping, fishing, traveling, museums, digging for arrowheads, space, even attending space camp in his 40’s, collecting many things, Elvis music, horses; especially, Secretariat, the triple crown winner about whom a movie was made, and Dwight insisted on being cast in. Dwight loved his family and his friends, and he loved life and lived it fully.
In Dwight’s own words, his “HOBBIES: Collecting Pre-Historic American Indian Artifacts. Collecting Kentucky Derby & Triple Crown memorabilia. Collecting National Aeronautics & Space Administration memorabilia. Collecting Thoroughbred, “Secretariat” memorabilia. Reading, Non-Fiction. Fishing. Camping.” This lightly touches all he was.
Dwight was an active participant and belonged to many organizations: Illinois Association for the Advancement of Archaeology, Springfield, IL; Southern Illinois University Alumni Association, Carbondale, IL; The Planetary Society, Pasadena, CA; The Sport of Kings Society, Chicago, IL; The Kentucky Derby Museum, Louisville, KY; and The Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels, Louisville, KY.
Dwight wore many hats and titles, but is most remembered for his Kentucky Derby passion. He was perhaps the most enthusiastic Kentucky Derby Collector in size and attitude the world has ever seen. He attended 44 consecutive Kentucky Derbys during his lifetime and had the largest collection of memorabilia and mint julep glasses, par none. He left this earth in search of only two glasses that he did not have, and he never bet one dollar.
Dwight is survived by his wife Doretta and three children: Deileen Galloway, Cassidy (Justin) Faires, and Christopher New; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Alexandra, Samantha and Michael Galloway; Adeline, Ansley, Stella and Callen Faires; great grandchild: Meredith Galloway. He will be sorely missed by all his family, friends and loved ones! May he always rest in peace.
