Dorothy Lee (Holt) Beamon, the oldest of 6 children was born July 14, 1931, to Jackson and Florence (Howard) Holt in Sturgis, KY. She attended and graduated from Dunbar High School in Morganfield, KY.
Dorothy Lee moved to Indianapolis, IN on May 31, 1949. On July 14, 1950, Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to Burdett Beamon (on her birthday). To this union was born 4 sons: Lindell Burdett, Virgil Jackson, Gerald Edward and Kelvin Douglas Beamon.
Sister Beamon was Saved and Filled with the Holy Ghost at Sanders Temple COGIC on Boulevard Place on December 12, 1965.
In 1967, Sister Beamon heard the voice of the Lord telling her to ‘Cry Loud and Spare Not’. She accepted her call as an Aspiring Missionary.
After being in the ministry, Missionary Beamon began to evangelize the Word of God. In 1970, the newly appointed State Supervisor (Mother Ida Mae Sanders) licensed Missionary Beamon as the first evangelist at Sanders Temple under her supervision.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon loved working in the field, ministering at the Salvation Army/ Harbor Light Center. She ministered in the nursing homes and visited the sick and shut In. She loved ministering in the tent revivals, the street ministry and conducting revivals at many churches from Indiana to Kentucky.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon’s fond love of the prison ministry led her to minister in 1970 at the Indiana Women’s Prison. Additionally, she served at the Men’s State Penitentiary in Pendleton, IN. In 1982, she began learning sign language, interpreting and signing to the hearing impaired. Her services were utilized by using sign language in the court system and her local church. In her spare time, she loved playing Scrabble, Phase 10 and working crossword puzzles
Evangelist Missionary Beamon had a community-oriented spirit, working with the Northwest Neighborhood Planning Development. She served as the president for the Block Club Crime Watch. Many children in the neighborhood came to know her as a George W. Sloan IPS School #41 traffic guard.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon served as a daycare provider for hundreds of children in her home for over 40 years, caring for as many as 15 children at a time.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon was the caregiver for 9 ½ years to Brother Walter Whitlock, who was hearing impaired and later lost his sight.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon touched many people’s lives by her love and ministry. She believed in the scripture of ‘working out her soul salvation with fear and trembling’.
Evangelist Missionary Beamon was preceded in death by her parents, Jackson and Florence Holt; siblings, Tilda May, Esterlene, Delores, James Holt and Gerlean Johnson and her husband of 63 years, Deacon Burdett Beamon.
Mother Evangelist Dorothy Beamon is survived by 4 sons, Lindell B., Virgil J. (Leneia), Gerald E. (Debra), and Kelvin D. (Karen) Beamon; 15 grandchildren, Elder Kevan B, Danielle, Demetrius, Veronica (Eric), Joshua, Laquita, Latwana, Monica, Minister Gerald II, Duane, Antoine, Austin; Brian, D’Andre and Mark; numerous great grandchildren; her only maternal niece Sherry (James) Curry (who was also her only ‘daughter’), a host of nieces and nephews; several God Sons, Elder John Robinson, Pastor Kenneth Johnson and Supt. John Harris (who is also a cousin); a host of cousins, family and friends. She also leaves to cherish her memory, the Golden Hill families, the neighborhood and the Sanders Temple COGIC Family.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Friday, December 16, 2022, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205. A visitation will occur Saturday, December 17, 2022, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205. A service will occur Saturday, December 17, 2022, from 11:00 AM at Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ, 3516 E 39th St, Indianapolis, IN 46205.
