Donald Hurst Campbell

Donald H. “Don” Campbell, 84 Don went home to his lord and savior Jesus Christ peacefully from his earthly home on April 27, 2024, holding his wife’s hand. He was born February 15, 1940, in a little holler of Hazard, Kentucky called Combs to Wilbert and Marjorie (Owens) Campbell. The family moved first to Austin, Indiana when Don was a young child and then later settled on the west side of Indianapolis. After high school at George Washington high school, Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corp for four years. He was stationed at El Toro in Santa Ana, California and completed a tour to Okinawa, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines. He credited the Marine Corp as the best decision he ever made. It was a source of lifelong pride for him. Don returned to Indianapolis after his honorable discharge and began a career as a law enforcement officer at the Indianapolis Police Department. He quickly became detective and rose to the rank of lieutenant. He was assigned to vice, robbery, homicide and the crime action (CAT) team units. He received many awards and recognitions over his 20-year career. He often said he would have been a policeman for no pay. Don owned and operated Campbell & Associates Private Investigations after retiring from the police department and became a well-known and sought after investigator for capital and major felony cases. Don and Marianne were married in Hazard, Kentucky on his birthday in 2004 after a long courtship. They were blessed to have celebrated their 20th anniversary (his birthday and Valentine’s) this year with blueberry pancakes at home. After a well-earned retirement, Don enjoyed his family, sports, and his beloved cats, who were his faithful and constant companions. He loved to travel, especially to the ocean. He was an insatiable reader with a hoard of books. He was a long-time member of the Antelope Club and the FOP #86. He was a member of Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marianne, daughters Kimberly (Todd) Pennington, Maria Turner, Georgia (Kayly Hawkins) Campbell, Bonus daughters Amanda (Brian McGrath) Burden and Katie (Trent) Burgess – grandchildren Tabitha (Devon) Suter, RJ (Payton) Turner, Jada (Jake) Still, Maya Domagalski, Campbell Craciunoiu, Emerson Burden, Logan, Flynn, Maren and Gwen Burgess – brother Jerry (Linda) Campbell, sisters Mary Johnson and Ruth Boston, sister-in-law Judy Campbell, many nieces and nephews including his especially close niece Missy Edgar. Preceding him in death are his parents Wilbert and Marjorie, mother-in-law Norma Kolodziej, brother Joe Campbell, brothers-in-law George Johnson, Ronnie Boston and Gary Kolodziej, best friends Linz, Hank, Rex, Sam, Bob, John, Chuck and Bud. The knights of the round table are reunited for lunch today. The family wishes to honor the memory of Dr. Gary Gagliardi who cared for Don for 23 years before his passing after also enduring cancer in March. We also would like to express our deepest gratitude for all of Don’s tireless caregivers at Richard Roudebush VA and Elara Caring. We are forever grateful for the care and compassion they gave Don and Marianne.
