Dollie Sue Settle

Dollie (May) Settle, 70, of Indianapolis, IN passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2024. Dollie was born May 31, 1953 in Richmond, IN to the late Woodrow and Lola (Swafford) May. Dollie is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, James L. Settle, and her precious daughters Lola and Leslie Settle (Brian). Dollie is also survived by her sisters Donna Harrison, Sandy McDaniel, Debbie Harlan (Paul), Patricia Wright, and brother Woody May (Tammy). She adored her two grandchildren Mark and Lauren. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren Stella, Sophia, Sage, Legacy, Aria, and DJ. She has many beloved nieces and nephews. We wish we could name them all because they all meant so much to her. They all gave her great joy. She is also survived by more dear, close friends than we can list. Each and every one of you know what you meant to her. She let you know in numerous ways every day. We are all devastated and our lives are forever changed at this sudden and immeasurable loss. The world has lost a true light and it is today a little grayer and certainly less fun. Dollie was FUN personified. She truly enjoyed her life. She was generous to a fault. Any one who came into her orbit felt her warmth and they were truly blessed to know her. Dollie and Jim are the proud owners of the Red Key Tavern (passed down to them from Jim’s beloved Dad, Russ Settle). The Red Key has been in existence for over 70 years. Dollie loved it and was dedicated to it for 40 years. She worked hard every day and never retired and only stopped working when she became ill. The Red Key is famous for its’ atmosphere, city-voted best cheeseburgers, but also for Dollie’s incredible potato salad(recipe passed down from her beloved mom Lola and now passed from Dollie to Leslie), and also not to mention heraward-winning chili. She worked hard every day but she also loved to have FUN. Dollie did not waste a minute of per precious life. She enjoyed a few drinks and playing Euchre . Most precious to her was her time with her very large family and dear friends. You all stepped up for her in ways for which we can never thank you enough. Dollie was a SPITFIRE. Yes, she was so loving and kind but she would tell you what she truthfully thought in a heartbeat and the next minute she would have you laughing. She loved to pinch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews on the cheek and laugh and then grab them up in a big hug. She never let you pay if you went out to eat with her no matter how much you argued. She would try to slip you money if she thought you were in need. She gave generous compliments that made you feel good about yourself. She was so generous of heart and spirit. Words can never do her justice. Our hearts are broken and our earthly family circle is forever altered. How such an enormous heart could fit in such a tiny body is a mystery. Dollie has a plaque in her dining room that tells us all we need to know: THOUGH SHE BE BUT LITTLE, SHE IS FIERCE A memorial visitation for Dollie will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E. 71st St, Indianapolis, Indiana 46220, followed by a celebration of life at 1:00 PM.
