Obituary of David H. Leavitt
David H. Leavitt passed into eternity Wednesday, November 2, 2022. He was born to the late Josephine and Edward Leavitt May 17, 1946 in Concord, New Hampshire. After a number of moves, the family settled in Shelby, Ohio where Dave graduated from high school. He attended and earned a degree in business from Cleveland State University where he was an active member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. In 1969 Dave was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years in Korea. Dave worked for 46 years in the banking industry, initially with the Federal Bank Examiners and later as Vice President of Commercial Loan Review for Indiana National Bank, a position he maintained as he moved through a series of bank mergers. In 1978 Dave married Judy Miller. During their 21 years of marriage he was a devoted husband to her and loving stepfather to her three children until her passing with Ovarian Cancer in 1999. Dave loved trains-traveling on them or playing with collection of HO model trains. He liked to put on an Engineer’s cap, blow a conductor’s whistle and tinker with his trains. Even his telephone made the sound of a puffing locomotive whenever a call came through. Dave was a devout Christian and an active member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon. While there he met Judy Richards whom he married in 2001. Dave was devoted to her and to her sons and he supported her love of music-the piano, teaching, concerts and recitals. He also shared her passion for travel. During their marriage they enjoyed more than 20 luxurious trips together. Dave and Judy had been raised in the Episcopal Church, so a particularly memorable experience for them was taking Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Dave leaves behind his wife, Judy Richards-Leavitt, and the families of William (Linda) Richards, Scott (Mary) Richards, brother-in-law, Andrew Hemphill, California, sister Joanne Leffel (Dan) Texas, brother, Steve Leavitt (Linda), Florida, and the families of Jim and Shari Adams in Carmel, Michelle and Stan Smith, Buffalo, stepson, Brad Miller, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the caregivers at the Story Cottage for memory care patients, and to Dr. David Josephson, Dave’s neurologist. In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests that donations be made to Second Presbyterian Church, The Alzheimer’s Association, or the Rock Steady Boxing program for Parkinson’s patients. A private service for family will be held at Leppert Mortuary – Nora Chapel. Dave’s ashes will be interred in the Columbarium at Second Presbyterian Church.
