Dave was born on April 19, 1944 in Indianapolis to Gene and Doris Houpt. He graduated from Speedway High School in 1962. Growing up in Speedway, he, of course, developed a love for racing and was an avid fan of Indy Car racing.
During his time in high school, Dave became an Amateur Radio Operator, which became his lifelong hobby, and proved useful while stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War, where he would run "phone patches" allowing troops to call their loved ones back in the U.S.
In 1978, he met Melody R. Wilkerson, the love of his life, and they married in 1980. They raised two sons together.
Dave was survived by his wife Melody, his two sons Kennedy (Michele), and Jeff (Beth), four grandsons, and two great grandchildren, and three sisters.
He will forever be missed.
