Bill was born in Champaign, Illinois, and grew up in Park Ridge. He attended the University of Northern Iowa during his freshman year, where he played on the basketball team, and later graduated from the University of Northern Iowa.
Bill completed helicopter training and served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps. He was stationed in Thailand for a year and was honorably discharged as a Captain as the Vietnam War began. Bill loved spending time with his children and granddaughter. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing and watching tournaments. He was a member of Rotary and St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Bill is survived by his son, Brad Hatfield, and granddaughter, Paige Hatfield. Bill was preceded by his daughter, Debbie Hatfield, his wife, Judith Hatfield, and parents, Kale and Dorothy Hatfield.
