A time to be born:
Beulah Encie Bickham Jordan began her journey on January 31, 1939 in Angie, Louisiana. She was the third of six children born to the late Houston Bickham Sr. and the late RuthAnna Brown Bickham. She was reared by her uncle and aunt, the late Wesley Jones and the late Luella Brown Jones.
A time to plant:
Sister Jordan spent her early years in Angie, Louisiana, where she was baptized at Weslie Ray United Methodist Church. After marriage she attended First Methodist Church in New Madrid, Missoiuri.
In 1965, she moved with her husband to South Bend, Indiana. Shortly after relocating she united with her Pilgrim Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Charles Rowlett. She was a faithful member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for 37 years, later becoming a member of First United Methodist Church for 7 years. In 2008, she relocated to the Indianapolis, Indiana area. To be near her daughter and her family. Shortly after relocating, she became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she remained until God called her home.
Sister Jordan was deeply committed to her church. Some of her current and past affiliations included: Sunday School Teacher, United Methodist Women, Church Home, United all of South Bend, Indiana. While at Mt. Zion, she was active in Ruby A. Langford Mission Unit and the Biblical Story Telling Ministry.
She believed the best way to know and serve God was to study His word. She was a graduate of Distance Learning Program, Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, Illinois and a student of Bible Study Fellowship in South Bend, Indiana, and Indianapolis, Indiana. She always had time for her community. These services were with Big Sisters, Hospice, African American Home in Touch, and NAACP, all of South Bend, Indiana. She continued to render her time and services in Indianapolis, Indiana, volunteering at The Veteran’s Hospital, Hospice, and Clowes Hall. She was a member of the Great Indianapolis Banquet. Also, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
A time to build:
Sister Beulah Jordan graduated from Wesley Ray High School in Angie, Louisiana. She received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She received a Master of Arts degree from South Bend, Indiana.
Her teaching career began in 1960 in Lilbourn, Missouri. She continued her career in the South Bend, Indiana Corporation, retiring after 40 years of dedicated service to the Education System. She motivated her students to excel and achieve their personal best. She had set some expectations for her students, and fellow teachers.
During her teaching career, she received several awards. Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America, Teacher of the Year, Honor Teacher at the 2000-2001 Honor’s Graduation, Niles High School in Niles, Michigan, and Favorite Teacher Award from present students.
A time to love:
Beulah was united in holy matrimony to the late Jonathan Leon Jordan Sr. She was a loving and devoted wife for nearly 40 years. They were blessed with two wonderful children, Jocelyn Rene Jordan and Jonathan Leon Jordan, four grand-children, Yara Elaine Hairston, Nile Andrew Hairston, Jessica Beatrice Jordan and Joel Lenox Jordan.
A time to die:
Sister Beulah Jordan answered God’s call on August 25, 2022. Her husband Jonathan Leon Sr, her parents Houston Bickham Sr. and Ruthanna Brown Bickham, her adopted parents Wesley Jones and Luella Brown Jones, her brothers Roland Bickham Sr., Houston Bickham Jr., and Ernest Bickham Sr., her sisters, Della Fugua and Honor Marie Jones preceded her in death.
A time to remember:
Sister Jordan leaves a legacy of inspiration to her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Jocelyn Rene (Douglas) Hairstone of Avon Indiana, her son, Jonathan Leon (Karen) Jordan II of Marietta, GA, two granddaughters, Yara Elaine (Andrew) Barge and Jessica Beatrice Jordan, two grandsons, Nile Andrew Hairston and Joel Lenox Jordan, and a host of relatives and friends.
