Avis Louise Hutton was called to Heaven on September 23rd after 96 years on earth. She was born on November 16, 1927, in Remus, Michigan, to Nona and Earl Gorton who preceded her in death. She also lived some of her childhood in Evart, Michigan with her parents and three siblings, Ina Jean, Eldon, and Dale, who also preceded her.
Avis attended Anderson University where she met Forest (Bud) Hutton at the local bowling alley where Avis worked in the attached Eastman dining room. She decided to change course and earn her LPN degree in Grand Rapids, Michigan before coming back to marry Bud in 1949. Avis and Bud moved to Indianapolis and raised four sons. During these years, Avis was a homemaker who was very active in her children’s lives. The family vacationed in the summers by camping all over the United States. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was a particular favorite, one that they visited many times over the years. When Avis’ youngest was in high school, she learned to drive and went back to school to renew her LPN license. She worked in the IU Eye Clinic, retiring in 1984. Avis and Bud enjoyed their working years with hobbies of dancing, playing cards, and going on cruises. Family was always most important. Avis and Bud could always be counted on to be present at or hosting family reunions, birthday parties, fish fries, Sunday dinners, sibling trips, and holiday gatherings.
After her retirement, Avis and Bud moved to St. Cloud, Florida, where they enjoyed 25 years of what they called “Paradise.” They hosted friends and family often and took advantage of all things Disney and ocean, especially when the kids and grandkids came to visit. Always one to keep busy and to serve, Avis volunteered at the local hospital, gardened, and kept the bird feeders full before moving to Brownsburg, Indiana to be closer to family.
Avis was a wonderful example of a godly woman to all who knew her. A faithful wife, a loving mother, a near perfect mother-in-law (her daughters-in-law agree), a doting grand and great grandmother, and a sweet friend, she will be sorely missed. Avis is survived by her husband, Bud, of 75 years; her four sons, Russell (Debbie), Paul (Connie), Charles, and Brad (Pam); seven grandchildren, Matt Hutton, Emily Muterspaugh, Dustin Hutton, Aaron Hutton, Chelsea Hutton, Casey Whitley, and Caitlyn Harris; and 8 great grandchildren. Another beloved grandchild, Doug Hutton, predeceases her.
There will be no services at this time. As they both wish, a Celebration of Life will be held for Avis and Bud together at some date in the future.
