Annie Mae was the first of three children born to Dock Harriel and Mary Williams Harriel in Ada, Alabama on January 4, 1928. She received her education there and continued to attend Alabama State University. When presented with an opportunity to move with relatives to Indianapolis, Indiana, she was excited to do so. Annie Mae met and married the one love of her life, Robert White, who had moved from Oakdale, Louisiana to also live with relatives in Indianapolis. They were married on May 28, 1955, and shared a wonderful life together until his passing on December 3, 1984, at age 55.
Annie Mae was a homemaker and mother who enjoyed simple pleasures like reading, cooking, spending time with her family, and supporting her church. She was an avid viewer of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. (Anyone calling during those times, did not know her very well.) Annie Mae was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church; and attended Barnes United Methodist Church with her family until her health was prohibitive. She worked outside of the home at Teledyne National Paper Company after her children were all enrolled in school. She made several friends there and stayed close with many of them over the years. She also had several friends at the Flanner House Senior Adult Day Program and enjoyed activities and outings with that group.
Annie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Maggie Murray, Montgomery, AL, and brothers, Roosevelt Harriel, Indianapolis, IN, and Sam Green, Montgomery, AL. She is survived by her three children: Patricia Dorsey (Dominic), Evelyn Gearries (Jeffrey), and Lee White (Lora). Annie’s grandchildren: Robert White (Malybu), Jennifer White, and Matthew White; Danielle Dorsey; and Janelle and Jason Gearries (Desiree). Great grandchildren: Robert White, Jr., Aniya White; Grayson and Gyan Covington; and John D. Foster, III.
A visitation for Annie will be held Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM. Burial will immediately follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
