Obituary of Alma J Phillips
Alma Jean Rascoe Phillips, 71, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022, in Indianapolis. Jean was born in Chattanooga, TN to Monroe and Bertha Edwards Rascoe on October 9, 1950. A child of a career military member, Jean spent time with her parents at Fort Campbell and Fort Knox, KY. She attended Fort Knox High School, Fort Knox, KY. When her parents relocated to Germany, Jean remained in the Fort Knox area. In 1972, she accepted Christ as her savior at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, Vine Grove, KY, where she served as the church secretary and sang in the choir. In 1975, following a Sunday morning service, she met Joseph C Phillips, her future husband. After two years of courtship, she married Joseph on November 19, 1977, in Fort Knox, KY, thus beginning a second tour of military service with her husband at Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Polk, LA, and Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN. While stationed at Fort Bragg, she attended and graduated from Fayetteville Technical Institute, Fayetteville, NC with a certificate as a dental assistance. She worked as a dental assistant for VA Medical Center for twelve years, University Hospital for seven years, Indiana School of Dentistry for two years, and Indiana Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates (IOMSA) for seven years. She retired from IOMSA in May 2013. A member of First Church of Christ Holiness USA, Inc., Jean served as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Christian Women’s Ministry. Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Monroe, and Bertha Edwards Rascoe; a son Edward Monroe Phillips; and a sister Angela E. Houston. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Joseph of the city; three sons Howard (Tracey) Phillips; Daniel (Jene) Phillips of the city; and Michael B. Elliott of Centerville, MI; a brother Tracy (Dawn) Rascoe of Washougal, WA; a sister Mary Michelle Blackmon of Chattanooga, TN; one grand-daughter Bailey Jane Phillips and a grand-son Myles Monroe Phillips of Indianapolis. A special grand-daughter Ramiah M. Elliott and two special grand-sons Michael A. Elliott of Indianapolis and Jaz Woodard of Los Angeles, CA. Two sisters-in-law Mary A. Phillips of Houston, TX; Corine White of St. Louis, MO; four brothers-in-law Erskine (Anna) Bell of Southfield, MI; Larry D Phillips of Indianola, MS; Robert Houston of Charlotte, NC and Michael Blackmon of Fayetteville, NC, best friends Bunny Johnson of Indianapolis, IN, and Bea Williams of Memphis, TN; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Crown Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Trotter of First Church of Christ Holiness, USA, officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crown Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.
