Obituary of Albert Byron Winter
Albert Byron Winter was born in Indianapolis, Indiana March 16th, 1925. The second son of five children born to William Winter and Coena (Denny) Winter. He was ninety-nine years old at his passing on September eighth. In the almost one hundred years of his life, he witnessed incredible changes. He grew up during the Great Depression. One of his earliest chores was to hoe the vegetable garden and to pull grass for the Guinea Pigs they raised for Eli Lilly. The family would gather in the evenings to listen to Franklin Roosevelts Fireside Chats. That all sounds corny, but life during the Depression was formative. With a family of seven to provide for, everyone had to help. A strong work ethic, honorable choices and stepping up to one’s responsibilities, defined our Dad. Al graduated from George Washington High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted for service in WW II. With his excellent grades he was selected to participate in the ASTP, an officer training program. Shortly after he completed the course, the program was discontinued, sending graduates back into the ranks. Al was assigned to the 14th Armored Division. They spent years engaged in battle on the ever changing frontlines. As they advanced, their division freed several Prisoner of War Camps as well as Concentration Camps. For decades, Al seldom spoke of his war years, simply saying “War was Hell”. Al attended Butler University on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in Business. He was a salesman for Aitkens Saw and though offered the entire state of California as his new district, he wanted to stay in Indiana and choose instead to work as a sales rep for Johns Manville. He then met and married Betty Joan Shufflebotham, aka Shuff. Al left Johns Manville, partnering with Frank Wright, and built W&W Equipment Company. They sold water treatment equipment to the growing post war communities. Al and Betty had four children, Kerry Winter Haver, Neil (Pam) Winter, Gwyneth Winter and Chris Winter. Al loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Al and Betty shared their love of the outdoors camping with their family. They traveled and tent camped coast to coast. In 1977 Al realized his dream of owning a farm, purchasing property in Greene County. He and Betty spent their weekends restoring the original 1850”s log cabin and working on the farm. Betty Joan preceded Al in death with her passing in 2023. He is survived by all four of their children, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services with full military honors will be Monday September 30th at Crown Hill’s Columbarium at 10:00 am. A Fellowship memorial meal will follow the service.
