Samuel (Sam) Livingston Seward, son of Carroll G. and Evelyn (Ide), of Melrose, East Dennis, Westwood, and, for the last 20 years, Barnstable, MA, died peacefully, with family at his side, on June 30, after a lengthy illness. A graduate of Dennis Yarmouth High School, Sam also attended Tabor Academy in Marion. Following high school, Sam attended Nichols College, earning his Associates Degree in Business. Drafted during the Korean War, Sam was stationed at Fort Belvoir, WVA, and assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers. After honorable discharge, Sam embarked on his very successful career as a shoe salesman, representing BF Goodrich (including the PF Flyer line), HH Brown, and Spalding. Though he sold all shoe types, his particular talent was in women's designs.
A talented gardener, Sam was particularly good at cultivating roses and beefsteak tomatoes. In addition, he loved to fish, and to square dance with his one-and-only partner, Helen.
An unfailingly devoted family man, Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Helen (Stanton) of Yarmouthport; six children, Barbara (Steve) LoVellette of Cincinnati, OH; Alice (Craig) Campbell of Barnstable; Samuel, Jr. (Kara) of Cold Spring, NY; William (Despina) of Cincinnati; Kathryn of Attleboro; Sara (Matthew) Mazzola of Millbury; fifteen grandchildren; and his brother, Charles, of Lancaster. A longtime and committed Christian, Sam was a member of the Osterville Baptist Church (OBC). Prior to his passing, Sam resided at the Mayflower Place Nursing Home of West Yarmouth; Sam’s family will be forever grateful for the skilled compassionate care provided by the Mayflower staff. Sam's memorial service will be conducted at OBC on Friday, July 6 at 11am; a reception will follow. Contributions in Sam’s memory, and in lieu of flowers, may be directed to OBC (824 Main St., Osterville, 02655). A kindhearted gentleman, Sam touched countless lives with his warmth, generosity, and humor
