Mary Fay Roggemann (Mary Fay), a lifelong Bostonian known for her keen wit, kindness, and love of her family and friends, passed away peacefully surrounded by her devoted family on Dec. 20, 2023. She was a beloved friend to many across her decades of public service in Boston, a dedicated and immensely loving mother to her children, and a doting Gramsie to the grandchildren who brought her so much joy in her later years.
Mary Fay was raised in Dorchester and settled in the Back Bay while enjoying summers full of fresh air and sea breezes at her home in Chatham. She began her career in public service as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, John Davoren. Mary continued her work in government in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor under Thomas P. O'Neill, III. For the past 30 years, Mary led Events Planning and Community Engagement at O'Neill and Associates, building on the skills gleaned over her lengthy career in Massachusetts government.
With her red lipstick and elegant, spirited demeanor, Mary cut a familiar figure across the Commonwealth, with her generosity and thoughtfulness making her a welcome presence wherever she went. She had exceptional taste for design, as well as sweets, and she could navigate anywhere in greater Boston using bakeries as her landmarks. She was a funny, smart, and adventurous woman.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Kristen Roggemann, Rebecca Tubbs, Katherine Leer, and Jeannie Roggemann, and her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her much-loved brother, James T. Fay.
A devout Catholic, Mary was deeply devoted to Saint Anthony, and we take comfort in knowing that she is alongside him, watching over us to ensure we are safe and loved. A celebration of her life will be held in the coming months. Please reach out to [email protected] for information.
