He was born the 5th of 8 children on October 20, 1925 in Medford, MA to the late Francis J. and Margaret (Reardon) Corbett. He was raised and educated in Medford and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. He served in Guam, Okinawa, and Guadalcanal as a Corporal in World War II. Upon returning to the US, he was employed by the Naval Shipyard in Charlestown, MA. He was a member of the US American Legion, the Elks Club, and the VFW.
At the age of 23, he heroically saved a child from drowning in the Charles River. A lifelong Catholic, John’s faith was a great part of his life and an inspiration to others. John enjoyed model shipbuilding, gardening, and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his sisters Helen Moriarty of Hyannis, MA Eileen Mullett of Hudson, NH, and Sister Cecilia Corbett, C.S.J. of West Roxbury, MA.
He was also the beloved uncle of Peggie Slocum, Mary Offiler, Elizabeth Bromage, Joseph and James Moriarty, Victoria Mullett, Jack and Douglas Mullett, and 12 grand-nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, November 12, from 4pm-7pm at Doane Beal & Ames, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9am, Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St., Hyannis. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
