Edward H. “Ned” Hudson, 92, of Yarmouthport, passed away on January 14, 2016, at Cape Cod Hospital. Ned was born in Providence, RI, on November 29, 1923, the son of Wilfred Augustus and Evelyn Mundy Hudson of East Providence. He attended grade school in East Providence, graduating in 1942 from Providence Country Day School where he played football and managed the baseball and basketball teams. Ned delivered newspapers while in high school, then spent two summers working for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad on the steamship run between New Bedford.
Ned studied engineering at the University of Maine until enlisting in the U.S. Navy during his sophomore year. On completion of naval aviator flight training and soloing as a pilot, he was reassigned to a repair ship, the USS Palawan (ARG-10), as a radar technician. He was stationed aboard the Palawan in the Philippines, Okinawa, and Sasebo, Japan, returning to the U.S. in 1946.
In 1947, Ned married Elizabeth F. (“Betty”) Leach of Blue Hill, Maine. The couple settled briefly in western Massachusetts, then moved to Cape Cod. In 1949, they built a house on a secluded road in Centerville overlooking Shallow Pond, where they lived for 47 years. From 1946 to 1986, Ned was employed as a commercial lighting salesman and engineer, appliance sales manager, energy services manager, and customer relations director at a variety of electric utilities.
He enjoyed his colleagues and stayed in touch with many of them long after he retired.
Ned served on the Town of Barnstable finance committee, the selectmen’s financial advisory board, the school building committee during design and construction of three schools. He played an active role at the Federated Church of Hyannis for more than six decades, where he served as church president and on many committees. He was also a member and past secretary of the Fraternal Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Hyannis. Ned was particularly proud to have donated 16 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He also served nearly 10 years as a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society’s “Road to Recovery”.
Ned is survived by his daughter Leslie J. Hudson and her husband John M. Halloran of Orono, ME, his son Steven L. Hudson and his wife Hilary H. Hudson of Southwest Harbor, ME, his granddaughter Alison F. Hudson of Lander, WY, and his grandson Peter G. Hudson of Williamsburg, VA. He was predeceased by Betty, his wife of 49 years, his parents, his sisters Mary (McDermott) and Ruth, and his brothers Robert and Jack. Ned will be interred with his wife Betty at Seaside Cemetery, Blue Hill, ME.
A memorial service for Edward H. (“Ned”) Hudson will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016, at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main Street. Reverend Dr. John Terry will officiate. Following the service, attendees are invited to a collation in Baldwin Hall.
