

Betty Jane (Johnson) Pelech, 73,of Yarmouth passed away January 3, 2011 after a brief illness. She was born in Barnstable on New Years Eve in 1937, the fourth youngest daughter of the late Eino H. and Lillian E. (Kittila) Johnson. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 9 years, Walter Pelech and also 4 of her 5 sisters, Martha, Elsa, Mariam and Cynthia. She is survived by her sister Mary Stanford of South Yarmouth, and her sons, Kevin A. Davis and his wife Janet, Stephen J. Davis and his longtime girlfriend Theresa Chiulli. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kevin A. Davis Jr. of Montreal and Whitney L.Stanley of Alexandria, Virginia and many nieces and nephews. Her friendships were very important to Betty, she leaves behind a multitude of good friends with whom she shared many fun-filled times. Betty graduated in 1955 from Dennis Yarmouth High School where she was a standout athlete, captaining the girls basketball team and leading the Drum Majorette squad as Head Drum Majorette. Betty was voted “Most Athletic” her senior year by her peers. California was soon home to Betty where she married and had her two boys. By 1979 Betty made her way back to New England, settling first in New Hampshire then eventually back to Cape Cod. She worked for 27 years at Cape Cod Hospital and during that time Betty was known for hosting wonderful holiday gatherings with her work friends at her Yarmouth home. These longtime friends were very caring and helpful to Betty during her illness. Betty was very proud of her Finnish heritage, she made a point to visit and stay in contact with her cousins in Finland. Some of Betty’s favorite pastimes included biking to the beach, painting in her sunroom and tending to her garden with friends. Betty’s retirement years were filled with travel and spending time with her family and friends, including those she met overseas. Those who knew Betty could attest to the fact that she never met someone she couldn’t strike up a conversation with, she was wonderful to her friends and kind to strangers she met along the way. Betty was a proud mother and grandmother who was known to boast of her sons' and grandchildrens' achievements. “Mimi”, as she was called by her grandchildren, will be missed at the family gatherings to come, but we will remember her as someone who loved us all dearly. Visiting hours at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St. Hyannis will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, January 15 to be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Woodside Cemetery Rt. 28 & W. Yarmouth Rd. Betty enjoyed the company of many loving pets throughout her life, in lieu of flowers donations may be sent to:
