William Carroll Vernon

William “Bill” Carroll Vernon, age 81, born January 29, 1943 in Roda, VA passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on June 27, 2024. William resided in Huntsville, AL for over 30 years and retired from Redstone Arsenal before moving to Muscle Shoals, AL in the fall of 2021.

William is preceded in death by his mother Nellie Dean Webb-Vernon; father Homer “Cotton” Vernon; daughter Melissa Vernon; sisters Mae Sanders and Sue Gaulke; brother Kenneth Homer Vernon; and grandsons Nicholas and Paul Vernon-Dupree.

He is survived by his wife Gladys Sharpe Vernon; daughters Angela (Gregory) Gruskiewich, Patsy Dupree and Melissa Pack; son Dean (Behl) Charman; brothers Kerry Vernon and Terry Vernon; sisters Kay Morgan, Ella Dean Wynn, Norma Sullivan and Patricia Watts. William is blessed with 12 surviving grandchildren; William, Harper, Ella and Kaleb Gruskiewich, Johann Housner, Desiree, Destiny and Christian Daniel, Mazlan Kelly, Kaela Newkirk, Eric and Dean Charman; four surviving great grandchildren; Dakota and Quran Lanier, Taylor Sue Charman and Chloe Newkirk.

William is a proud Vietnam Veteran who served over 20 years in the United States Army. His biggest accomplishment in life is the family he created. He is a devoted husband, proud father and pawpaw. His grandchildren have been the biggest joy in his life. His favorite saying to his family is “You know what? I love you”. His love is strong and his words are always wise. He will be missed by many but his memory will forever live on!

A visitation for William will be held Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. A the celebration of life service with military honors will occur Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel, 698 Winchester Rd NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. William will be laid to rest in Elora Cemetery, Elora, TN.

Pallbearers will be Gregory Gruskiewich, Kaleb Gruskiewich, Eric Charman, Troy Hall, Benny Reed and Jeff Prince. Honorary pallbearers will be William Gruskiewich and Kerry Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
