RC was born November 15, 1939 in Ringgold, GA to Josie & RC Holmes Sr. He is the oldest of seven children. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Layne. Together they had three children; Trina, Randy and Danny.
RC & Barbara moved to Chattanooga, TN where he worked for Chris Craft Company building boats. While living in Chattanooga he attended and graduated from Kirkman Technology School as a machinist. In 1968 they moved to Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, after his father-in-law got him a job with Astro Space in Huntsville as a tool and die maker. After a few years with them he left to go to work with the Chrysler Corporation. During his thirty years with Chrysler, he served one term as the Vice-President of UAW Local 1413. He later became a tooling engineer and joined the Skill Trades Union, Local 1929. He served one term as their President. He retired from Chrysler in 2001.
RC had a lot of friends. He was a man of honesty, character, and great morals. The people who met him said, “They don’t make good men anymore like Mr. RC.” He was very appreciative. All of the nurses just loved him and they would always tell him he was their best patient. He always said “thank you,” even when the nurses gave him a shot. They laughed and said no patient has ever thanked us for a shot.
RC was a very humble man and always thought of other people and he appreciated everyone. He loved eating at Marvin’s Restaurant in Fayetteville, TN. Anytime he would see a table of Police Officers, or Firefighters there eating, he would pay for their meals and thank them for their service. One time he attempted to take his shoes off to give them to a Preacher after he commented how much he loved them. RC was that type of man, he would give you the shirt off his back if you wanted it.
RC loved college football. When he watched it with Trina, his daughter he would pretend to be a Tennessee Vols fan. When he watched with Danny, his son he would pretend to be an Alabama Crimson Tide fan. His heart however belonged to the Georgia Bulldogs.
RC is preceded in death by his parents Josie & RC Holmes, Sr., and his son Randy Holmes.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter; Trina Browning of Toney, AL, son; Danny (Tina) Holmes of Elkmont, AL, grandchildren; Nathan (Shiara) Holmes of Lake Stevens, WA, and Jessica (John) Malone of Huntsville, AL, Great grandchildren; Bo Holmes, Henslee Morrow, and Elizabeth Holmes, two sisters; Fannie Mae Jamison and Geneva Holmes both of Lafayette, GA, four brothers; James Holmes of Tunnell Hill, GA, Charles (Paulette) Holmes of Layfette, GA, Johnny Holmes of Ringgold, GA, and Eugene Holmes of Layfette, GA.
A special thanks goes to Ms. Kathy Hale, for the unwavering love she gave to her friend, RC, “Pops.” She was there every evening for hours cooking him his favorite meals and making sure he was ok. His daughter, Trina, called Kathy “an angel from heaven,” for all the laughs she gave to RC. Not only did she help take care of RC, the two of them shared a special bond. They would talk for hours. In Kathy, RC found someone who he shared his secrets and deepest feelings. In her he found a great and special friend!
Rest in eternal peace “Pops.” You will be missed forever.
