Mary “Jo” was born on December 23, 1941 in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton David “A.D.” Vickers and Annie Louise Parks Vickers; her brother Jerry Vickers (Gloria) of South Gate, CA; brother James “Jim” Vickers of Huntsville, AL; sister Alta “Pete” Barkley (Bill) of Decatur, AL; brother Gregory Vickers of Huntsville, AL; niece Donna Traylor (Mike) of Somerville, AL.
She is survived by her nephew, who she raised, Chad Vickers (Jennifer); her sister, Jill Brownell, both of Huntsville, AL. She is also survived by nieces and nephews who she loved, and treated as if they were her own children including Philip Brownell (Jennifer), Joseph Brownell, Billy “Cubby” Barkley, Tab Barkley, Dustin Waits (Brooke), and Nikki Jones (Frederick), and many other great nieces and nephews that she adored.
She was raised and lived most of her life in Huntsville, Alabama. She graduated from S.R. Butler High School, and later achieved her Masters of Education Degree from Alabama A&M University. She was employed by The Huntsville City School System for over 30 years. She briefly taught at Mastin Lake Elementary School and the majority of her tenure was spent teaching third grade at Lincoln Elementary School. Her love for children was evident and she was always giving to others.
Jo was a faithful servant of her Lord Jesus Christ. She had a personal relationship with the Lord and she had unshakable faith. Jo was a wonderful conversationalist and enjoyed her years following retirement learning to speak Spanish at the senior center. Jo loved nature and God’s creation. Her favorite season was autumn, and she enjoyed reveling in the vibrancy of the colors of the changing leaves. She loved spending time with her family and loved ones reminiscing about old times.
