Laura Anne Wolfe Smith, 85, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014 at Huntsville Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Her parents, Everett Franklin and Rebecca Bea Wolfe; her brother, John Horrall Steelman; and niece, Jill Steelman Phelps, preceded Mrs. Smith in death.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her loving husband of close to 60 years, Louis E. Smith; her two sons, James O. Smith, and L. Mark Smith; numerous nieces and nephews in Mississippi and Indiana; her special great niece, Jackie McClafflin in Georgia; and her bonus grandson, Phoenix.
Laura was born and raised in Gibson County, Indiana, and graduated high school there. She graduated from Purdue University where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. Upon graduation, Laura joined the Purdue University faculty as an extension agent in Park County. She was one of the first women to have her own weekly television program--hosting a cooking and home show broadcast in the early days of TV in Indianapolis. Mrs. Smith continued her career in several teaching positions throughout her married life and into retirement years. She was also a faithful member of the DAR and a member of Holmes Street United Methodist Church since 1964.
You may visit with the family at Holmes Street United Methodist Church on Friday, October 10, 2014, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. There will be a funeral service at the church, conducted by Rev. Todd Owen, commencing at 12:00 Noon, Friday, with the interment to immediately follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
