John was born on August 1, 1950 in Dermott, Arkansas. He graduated from Walker County High School in 1969 and later in the year married the love of his life on his 19th birthday.
John worked as a meat cutter for 32 years. He retired in 2006 from Redstone Arsenal Commissary with 21 years of service.
John devoted his entire life to worshiping and serving his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene and was generous with his time serving in the church and driving vans to bring children to church. He enjoyed giving to support the ministries of the church, especially missionaries to help spread the Word of God around the world. One of his fondest memories was a Work and Witness trip to Nairobi, Kenya where he helped build faculty housing on the campus of Africa Nazarene University. John’s journey with Christ was not only important to him spiritually, but is what shaped him into the loving man that we all knew and loved.
John spent his free time hunting, golfing, riding motorcycles, and watching Alabama football. John was devoted to his family and always worked hard to provide for them. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved taking his grandchildren to Chuck E. Cheese when they were younger.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Henry Maxwell and Hazel Bobbitt Terry; his step-mother, Catherine Hall Terry; his brother, Henry Jarrel Terry; and his grandson, John Thomas Hammond.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Denise Thomas Terry of Madison; his daughters, Melisa Terry Rogers (John) and Erica Terry Hammond (Aaron) of Madison; his sister, Sherry Jean Terry Conaway of Greenfield, IN; his brother, Julian Terry (Amy) of Madison; his sister-in-law Fran Terry of Seminole, FL; his grandchildren, Tyler Rogers, Carter Hammond, Jackson Hammond, Clara Hammond, and Julia Hammond; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lunches of Love, Journey Church of the Nazarene, 9640 Meridian Street North, Huntsville, AL 35810.
A Facebook live service will be streamed on Wednesday, January 27 at 2PM @valhallafunerals from Journey Church of the Nazarene, with a private burial at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
