Woody was very bright and excelled at math and music. Attending Virginia Tech as a cadet, he graduated in 1955 with a master’s degree in statistics. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army spending time in Ft. Knox, KY, and Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, before being sent to work under General Toftoy at Redstone Arsenal. In 1958, after completing his service time with the Army, Woody went to work for NASA and spent his career as a reliability engineer. One project he was particularly proud of was working on the Space Shuttle main engines.
He was blessed with the gift of music and was involved in local barber shop quartets as well as being part of, and directing, choirs at Holmes Street, Epworth, Trinity, and Latham United Methodist churches. He was also very involved with the local ballroom dance community and loved to dance.
Woody was a kind and loving person and leaves behind many who loved him in return. Despite suffering from the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease, he was a blessing to others to the end and would often bring a smile to anyone’s face especially while leading singing at Harbor Chase where he lived for several years. He leaves behind his children, John Bombara, Karen Zecher (David), grandchildren Megan, Aaron, and Ethan Zecher.
A visitation for Woody will be held Friday, December 27, 2019 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road, NE, with funeral service at 2:00pm, at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
