Doris was born at the “bend in the river” in Lauderdale County to Frank and Clara Gooch. She was the youngest of four children. Hard work and love were instilled in her from an early age and she carried these attributes until the end. She was well loved, smart, kind, and enthusiastic about life. She was head cheerleader at Coffee High School and a friend and confidant to many.
Doris met the love of her life, Fred Aldridge, while at Coffee High School and they were married on September 14, 1952. Theirs was a life full of love, hard work, and plenty of laughter. Together they raised their three sons, Danny, Matt, and Andy, who allowed her love to shine. She held the family together after tragically losing her beloved Matt in 1979.
She made many dear friends in Florence and then in Huntsville, where the family moved in 1975. She also loved her kids’ and grandkids’ friends as she loved her own, and was a “second mom” to many.
Doris’ love for people carried over seamlessly into her career in real estate. She was a top 10 producer for over a decade. Her clients loved her and their friendships continued long after the business relationship ended.
She was a consummate hostess and was happiest while serving others. Her family was the joy of her life. As a grandmother, she was the embodiment of unconditional love, encouragement, and wisdom. Whether it was with her sons, her grandchildren, or with friends, she was most fulfilled when enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation at the kitchen table with loved ones.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Fred Aldridge, her parents Frank and Clara Gooch, her son Matt, brothers W.F. Gooch and Charles Gooch, and sister Elizabeth McDonald. She is survived by her sons, Daniel F. Aldridge and Andrew C. Aldridge (Lisa); grandchildren Rob Aldridge (Nicole), Ben Aldridge, Emmie Boyett (Bradley), Bedford Aldridge, and Savannah Aldridge; and her great grandchildren Catherine Conley, Frances Aldridge, and Jack and Ella Kate Boyett; special “daughters of the heart” Melanie Eakes, Lisa Henley, Jan Camp, Robin Amesbury, and Casey Aldridge.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice Care and all the caregivers that loved and cared for her so well. We would like to especially thank Rachel and Andrew from Amedisys Hospice and Josephine and Valerie for private care.
If you would like, the family requests that you honor Doris by wearing a touch of purple, her favorite color, to her celebration of life service.
