Evelyn Christine Cantrell gained her entry into heaven on February 12, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. Christine was born on July 1, 1934 to Glenn and Lena Crowe Gray. She graduated from West Armuchee High School in LaFayette, GA in 1952. She married Alvin James Cantrell in July, 1952, who was serving in the Air Force. During his enlistment she accompanied him to California, Utah, and Louisiana where he was stationed. After leaving the Air Force, they lived in Marietta and LaFayette, GA, relocating to Huntsville, AL in 1962. Christine was a member of University Baptist Church. She was a housewife and raised five children. She worked at Loveman’s Department Store and later as a clerk on the arsenal until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Doyle and Herschel Gray; her sister, Rubie Hice; her son, Paul Cantrell and her granddaughter, Ashley Huskey.
She is survived by her children, Debbie Wright (David), Morris, AL, Rhonda Huskey (Ricky), Beverly Cantrell, and Keith Cantrell; her grandchildren, Matthew Wright (Keely), Christy Wright, Crystalle Flores (Ray), Heather Hopkin, Alexander Amacher, Paul Cantrell (Jessie), Christin Cantrell, and Harmony Coley (Bryan); great grandchildren, Kinsley and Mattie Wright, Elizabeth Flores, Logan and Piper Cantrell, Michael Coley, and Victoria (due in July); her sisters, Carolyn Dexter (Bob) and Jackie Ebright (Ron); sister-in-law, Margaret Newton (WL); several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Christine enjoyed spending time with her family and was so proud of all her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. She was an excellent seamstress and kept her daughters beautifully dressed in ruffled dresses, dance uniforms, prom dresses and made her sister’s wedding gown. She loved to crochet and made the grandchildren afghans and the granddaughter’s dresses and accessories. She toured with her church family on retreats. So many wonderful memories of her are shared by her family throughout her life. If you grew up with her children then you were part of the neighborhood family and she was ‘another mother’ who treated you as her own. Her door was always open to family and friends.
We want to thank her nurses and staff during her short stay at Whitesburg Gardens Nursing Home. She grew to love each one of them and we couldn’t have asked for a more caring group. They were there for her every need and were always so loving and caring to her.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 15, 2019 at Valhalla Funeral Home from 4:30-7:30. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, February 16, 2019 with visitation from 10:00-11:00 and the Service at 11:00. Entombment will follow. She will be laid to rest next to her husband. Please leave fond memories and condolences for the entire Cantrell family at www.valhallafunerals.com.
