Feb 3, 1923 – Aug 11, 2014 Charles Hill, 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug 13, 2014 with his wife and daughters with him. He had been a residence of Huntsville for over 60 years. He was born in Guntersville February 3, 1923 to Lee and Lila Sparks Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Hill and sister Billy Thompson. Charles was a veteran of WWII having served in Patton's 3rd Army 737th Tank Battalion. His Battalion landed on Normandy’s beach 6 days after D-Day and he was involved in extensive action in the Battle of the Bulge, Mortain, and St Lo. After returning from the war, he married Ruth Hedricks on August 21, 1946. The newlyweds traveled to Tuscaloosa and Charles attended the University of Alabama under the GI Bill. After four years, Charles graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. After graduation, he worked at the National Bureau of Standards (NIST) in Washington D.C., and then worked for the U.S. Army. Charles and his family returned to north Alabama in 1951 to work at Redstone Arsenal for the Army. He retired in 1978 in order to spend more time with his family. Charles was known for his avid gardening and storytelling. He spent many hours in his garden cultivating hybrid tomatoes and producing large amounts of sweet corn, squash and okra. If he wasn’t gardening, he was busy telling stories of one of his adventures from growing up in Marshall County to reliving World War II offensives and battles. Charles is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Hill, a sister Inez Norton (Wetzel), two daughters, Janet Jordan (Danny), and Nancy Watts (Danny), three granddaughters, Jessica Pany (Bart), Jennifer Palmer (Brandon), and Laura Harper (David), nine great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 1 pm on Saturday Aug. 16 at Valhalla Funeral Home with the service to follow at 3 pm.
