Betty Gray Goens, 89, of Huntsville, AL died Thursday, December 22, 2022 in Huntsville Hospital after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be at Valhalla Funeral Home on Winchester Road in Huntsville on Wednesday, December 28 at 11:00 am, with the funeral service beginning at 12:00PM. David Wimpee will be officiating, with Jeff Holmes and Matthew Anderson assisting.
Betty was born on April 28, 1933 in Huntsville, Alabama. She attended West Huntsville School. On April 13, 1950, she married the love of her life, William Floyd Goens, Jr. They had three sons, Robert Elwin, Kenneth Steven, and Michael Dale Goens. After having her boys, Betty worked at P.R. Mallory Co., Inc. for several years making some of the capacitors that were used by NASA for the Apollo program.
After working there, Betty became a homemaker and then a grandmother. She later volunteered at Ridgecrest Elementary School in the clinic, helping to take care of children who became ill. One of her favorite things to do was cook for her family. Holidays were filled with delicious meals and even better desserts. She loved and was loved by everyone, including many people who called her Grandmother because she made them feel like family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James Thomas Gray and Bertha Mae Benson Gray, her husband, William Goens, her son Mike Goens, and her brothers, Vernon and James Gray and sisters Jessie Hughes, Lula Mae Gray, and Belle Couch.
She is survived by her sons Robert (Kerry) of Huntsville, and Steve (Kaye) of Decatur, daughter-in-law Sharon of Florence, grandchildren, Michelle Davy (Sean), Matthew Anderson (Pamela), Kristina Holmes (Jeff), Karen Griffin (John), and Lance Hyche (Missy) as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeff Holmes, John Griffin, Tristan Holmes, Brett Holmes, Jackson Hyche, Matthew Anderson, Tommy Gray, and Patrick Hicks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
