Bernice Pitsis Rush passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday December 5th, 2024 surrounded by Her loving son Michael (Cierra) Pitsis and her grandchildren. She was a member of St John The Baptist Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her mother Daisy Vibbert, Father Clint Vibbert, sisters Flora Vibbert, Nora Pike, Colleen Barnett, Ruby Vibbert, and brother Jesse Vibbert.
She is survived by her spouse Curtis Rush Sr, her sons Mike Pitsis (Cierra Pitsis), Curtis Rush Jr (Lori Rush), and her daughter Lana (Tucker) Weir, and 9 grandchildren, Riley Pitsis, Rider Pitsis, Jake Pitsis, Drew Pitsis, Hailey Boyd, Cayden Shepard, Matthew Rush, Saleah and Rhett Weir and brother Frank Vibbert as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.
Bernice worked as a student advisor at UAH for 52 years until COVID. Bernice was chosen to carry the Olympic torch in 1996 as a "community hero," a blessing to organizations which help others. She was Alabama chairperson and president of the Madison County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She served on the board of HELP Line, HOPE Place, and the Mental Health Association. She serves on the board of Crisis Services of North Alabama, was a member of the Alabama Network of Victim Services and was a volunteer lobbyist for the Alabama Victim's Rights Amendment.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1055 Hughes Rd, Madison, AL. Following the visitation will be a mass of christian burial at 12:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Church, 1055 Hughes Rd, Madison, AL.
