Ms. Anna B. Mayes, beloved family matriarch, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, church member, and friend passed away on Sunday, Dec 9 at the age of 87. From humble beginnings with 9 siblings, Ms. Mayes lived most of her life in the Madison County, Al area, raising her own family with her husband Clarence Mayes who passed away in 2000 after almost 50 years of marriage. After a career at GTE in manufacturing, she retired, changing her daily routine, but never slowing down as her passions stayed in her love for the outdoors, planting and canning a vegetable garden each year, tending to her beautiful flower beds, cooking heavenly homemade meals, and being involved in the Valley Church of Christ congregation. She was a strong, but loving woman whose work ethic was inspiring. Her contentment with the challenging, but full life with which she was blessed could be heard in the hymns she would always hum no matter whether it was a rake or a spoon or a Bible in her hand or she was enjoying a sit in her favorite porch glider. She is survived by her sister Ms. Frances Martin, daughters Patricia Hodges and Sandra Miller, grandsons Jeremey and Jonathan Hodges, and great-grandchildren Emily Hodges, Katie Hodges, and Gabe Hodges. Services will be at Valhalla Funeral Home, Friday, Dec 14 – Visitation 12-2pm – Service and Burial to follow. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com for the Mayes family.
