Allen Charles Metzger, 99, quietly and peacefully left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at his home in Huntsville. A devoted husband and father of 6, Mr. Metzger served his country during three wars. Growing up in Altoona, PA, Mr. Metzger worked with his father on the Pennsylvania Railroad serving as a machine apprentice. The Juniata Shops in Altoona went on strike, and with a wife and son to support, he joined the Army in 1945 after serving in the Pennsylvania National Guard. After World War II, Mr. Metzger served at Aberdeen Proving Ground before being assigned to serve in Korea. In 1954, Mr. Metzger was sent to Redstone Arsenal’s Missile Command, where he served until his retirement in 1961. After his military service of 23 years, Mr. Metzger worked in a similar position for civil service. Mr. Metzger is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Verna, sister Joyce Davis, brother Donald Metzger of Altoona, PA, and son-in-law David Buford of Huntsville. Surviving Mr. Metzger are sister Marge Ritchey of Altoona, PA, sons Richard Metzger (Nancy), Gary A. Metzger, daughters Suzanne Napolitano (John), Marsha Buford, Cheryl Fedrowisch (David), and LeAnn Metzger Knight, 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many wonderful caregivers. His most prized decoration in the Army among many was The Legion of Merit. You may visit with the family on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 12 to 1:30 pm at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd. A graveside service with US Army Military honors will immediately follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oak Park Baptist Church youth ministry at 2105 Cloys Ave., Huntsville, AL 35811.
