Lois J. Johnston, 96 of North Manchester and formerly of Huntington, passed away on Wednesday morning, October 11, 2023 at Timbercrest Senior Living in North Manchester. Lois was a 1944 graduate of Huntington High School. She had worked in food service for many years in California and Michigan. She had also worked in the Library at the Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, she was honored in 1999 and 2000 for her volunteer work at the Troy Public Library in Michigan. Lois grew up in Huntington, but spent many years of her adult life in California and Michigan. She attended the Brethren church for most of her life. Lois loved to host family and friends; she loved people and was loved by people. Lois enjoyed reading and doing puzzles.
Lois was born on February 2, 1927 in Huntington, the daughter of the late Donald and Cecil (Divelbiss) Gardenour.
She was united in marriage to Richard Johnston on August 30, 1946 in Huntington. They were married for nearly 77 years. Richard preceded her in death on May 24, 2023.
Survivors include a son: Thomas Johnston of Rochester Hills, MI; a daughter: Brenda Johnston of Louisiana; three grandchildren: Adrian Johnston of Mt. Clemons, MI, Melissa Johnston of Charleston, SC, Tina Shields of Arlington, TX; six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother: Donald Gardenour, Jr. and a sister: Annabelle Land.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
Memorial donations can be made out to New Hope United Brethren Church in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
Interment will take place at a later date in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Huntington County.
