Jannette (Lantis) Hartman Caley, 103 of Brewster, MA and formerly of Huntington, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at her home. Born January 15, 1921, in Huntington, IN to Ernest Lantis and Sylvia (Thatcher) Lantis.
Jannette, along with her three sisters, Virginia, Louise, and Dorothy, worked at their parents’ restaurant, South Side Lunch throughout years of ownership. Her fond memories of years at the restaurant have been passed down through the generations of her family. She was a member of the Huntington High School Glee Club and was the 1938 HHS Spelling Champion.
Her marriage to Hugh Lindsey Hartman took place on June 20, 1942. Following Hugh’s return from WWII, many happy years followed, including the birth of son Richard and daughter Janet. Summers spent at their cottage at Lake Webster were fondly remembered throughout her life.
Jannette’s dedication to her faith, and her generosity of spirit were important elements of the honorable, benevolent person she was. Always eager to give back to the community, she was a longtime volunteer at Huntington Hospital. Forever passionate about the importance of engaging in politics, she was a proud election volunteer throughout the years.
One of her many talents, aside from making award-worthy pies and fried chicken, was her ability to maintain and nurture lifelong relationships with friends and family. Dedicated to the art of correspondence, we have all known the joy of finding Jannette’s letter in the mailbox or of hearing her dear voice on the other end of the line.
Jannette moved to Cape Cod, MA in 2011 to be closer to her family. A passionate, lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, she became an enthusiastic Boston Red Sox fan in her new home. She adored life’s simple pleasures: a good cup of Janet’s homemade soup, a Nick’s tenderloin shipped from Huntington, a lunch date in the company of her girls.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Hartman of East Dennis, MA, granddaughters, Laurel Jannette Hartman of Brewster, MA and Lindsey Blair Wardrop of Melrose, MA, great-granddaughters Madeline Lindsey and Charlotte Blair Stallsmith, in addition to many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Lindsey Hartman, son, Richard Hugh Hartman, second husband, Eldon Caley, and sisters, Virginia Wampler, Louise Buzzard, and Dorothy Stocksdale.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation of the exceptionally compassionate care provided by Heather Malcomson, NP, and Dr. Lawrence McAuliffe. Private family gatherings held in Huntington, IN and at Paine’s Creek in Brewster, MA. Donations in her memory may be made to the Brewster Council on Aging, 1673 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631.
